History 151G - World History Since 1500

Autonomy - Independence or freedom as of the will or one's actions
Ominous - foreboding; threatening

To begin the semester, I was introduced to the voyages that began occurring by explorers around the world. Obviously, I knew they happened, but never learned too many details.

Amerigo Vespucci
An explorer named Amerigo "Americus" Vespucci landed on the coast of South America in the 15th century. Columbus thought this "New World" was part of Asia, but Vespucci disagreed. Upon his return, a pamphlet was published describing his voyages and the things that he witnessed.  The author of the pamphlet credited the new land to Vespucci and decided it should be called America after him.
